Tip of the week – Fiberglass maintenance

Your boat’s gelcoat surface is its skin. There are dos and don’ts about gelcoat maintenance. From the factory the gelcoat is a smooth  surface that shines; abrasives such as comet or soft scrub will deteriorate that shine and smoothness.

Always avoid using any products that contain acids. The non-skid is probably the toughest to clean. Starbrite makes a product that is great for the whole boat called non-skid deck cleaner. It has no abrasives and leaves a coat of teflon for protection, it’s safe to use on aluminum as well. Try to keep a coat of wax on the entire surface, this will make cleaning much easier.

A little bleach will also help clean the deck when used with the Starbrite product. Be careful to keep bleach away from upholstery, as it will dry it out.

Just like your car, dry your boat when time allows. This will keep water stains from etching the finish.
